Yogi

12/25/03—Christmas Day:

Yogi greatly enjoyed his first Christmas. He opened his presents and played with them, while mostly staying out of trouble. Keeping the wrapping paper and ribbon away was a challenge, but he quickly learned not to play with the tree ornaments. He mastered his fear of the stairs and by the end of the day was going up and down unassisted.

The next day his friend Harlot visited, and that’s when he turned vicious (just kidding).

11/27/03—Thanksgiving Day:

Check out the video clips of Yogi!

Yogi seems to be getting bigger every day. Last weekend he climbed on top of his small crate, so I had to take it out or he might have jumped out of his pen. This week I set up a larger crate and puppy-proofed the laundry room.

All in all, he’s been doing very well. Some days are better than others, but if he gets out enough and gets some exercise, he’s much easier to live with. He’s finally getting to the point where he realizes that I don’t need to be with him when he’s outside, so he can spend some time out there by himself or conversing with the neighbor dogs through the fence.

He’s had his bath and now it’s time to go see Grandma! He hasn’t been in his carrier for a while, so we’ll see if he still fits.

11/22/03—Puppy Party:

Chris Donohue brought his brood—Sophie (8), Gracie (6), and Brian (2)—over for a puppy party. Next door neighbor David Page also stopped by with William (5) and Ian (3). Completing the party were Tom and Debbie. By the end of the day Yogi was paws-up tired.

11/11-18/03—Cousin Tim Visits:

Cousin Tim from Hawaii stayed with us for a week. Yogi thinks he has tasty toes.

11/6/03—Yogi Comes Home:

A rainy day meant that the puppies had to be inside today. They all escaped their confinement last night so today they had free reign on the basement. The only casualties seemed to be a book and a couple other small items. All the puppies ran to meet me—they looked as though they all wanted to escape the chaos. Yogi was one of those greeting me, so I picked him up and carried him upstairs. He got some quality time with his Mom and a final private suckle.

Just like the book said, putting treats in the crate made him curious enough to wander in; I shut the door and carried him to the car. All was fine for about 2 minutes, and then he started to whine. A little at first, then some yelps, and finally a real cry. I calmed him down by talking to him, but he was pretty vocal. I felt bad for him.

When we got home he stopped crying and got curious. We checked out the backyard and then the rain drove us inside. He wasn’t happy in his pen so I held him for a while. Then I fed him by hand a few handfuls of puppy chow and he went to sleep for almost an hour. When I went upstairs to eat dinner, he crawled back in his crate, so I guess he likes it ok in there.

11/3/03—Puppy Visit:

Today was the puppies’ first day spending all day outside. When I arrived they all ran over and started nibbling on my ankles—real anklebiters! It was a mistake to wear Topsiders because they thought the laces were chewtoys. Yogi lost two of his sisters yesterday, the first two to leave the litter. He comes home with me on Thursday evening. I took some video tonight so sooner or later I’ll be able to post some clips of the puppies playing together.

10/28/03—Puppy Visit by Paul with Chris & Joyce Gettings:

Yogi was a bit subdued last night—either he wasn’t feeling well or was just tired. But he didn’t mind being held at all. I held him while Meg gave him his medicine, which was no big deal. Meg and Roger said that he’s more likely to come over and say hello after the rest of the pups have had their chance. They also said that Yogi likes to crawl over the other pups when they’re sleeping and wake everybody up. He’s going to be a character, that’s for sure!

He’s grown about twice as big in the week since I last saw him. He’s not the smallest of the litter, but he’s not the biggest, either (which is a good thing). Some of the black ones with big grey feet look like daddy may have been a German Shepherd. Chris and Joyce seemed to like the smallest black one the best; they’re already talking “Christmas present” for Harlot and Vixen ;>)

10/25/03—Report from Yogi’s doggie “Mom” Meg:

We [Meg and Roger] took Yogi to the vet today. He was peeing blood and we got an oral antibiotic for him. It's unusual for a pup that young to have that problem so the vet asked if the pups were suckling each other because they might be scratching each other. I told her that I've seen them biting weenies--and she said that if he was bitten that he might have gotten an infection from that. Marcie held him when we got home and he took his medicine very well. I haven't seen any bloody urine tonight (whew!), but I am keeping an eye out to see how he does.

The vet was very impressed and noted how calm Yogi is. She checked him out and felt for his testicles. One hasn't dropped yet, but he does definitely have two. He weighs 5 lb 6 oz. I am taking them to Coolridge Animal Hospital in Maryland and the owner, Dr. Puschek, is a friend of our friend Traci and Ryan. She held Yogi when he first came in and said she didn't feel anything wrong internally--so he got a double dose of vets this morning. She was quite taken with him, too. He gets a lot of attention being so handsome!

The vet also said getting their shots next week is too soon, so we rescheduled to the 15th. Ellen is coming down here on Saturday the 8th and I didn't want to make her sit at the vet while we get them all shots. You are more than welcome to take him home before that, you'll just have to get his shots at your vet.

I think Dazey has stopped feeding them--I have not seen her feed them in about a week. She might be doing it at night or during the day, but she has definitely slowed down. They are now eating puppy chow twice a day--thankfully Marcie got them started on puppy food over a week ago.

Today was his first ride in the car and he whined about it. I think it's because we were in a traffic jam on the beltway on the way back. He rode in a box on the way over and on the way home sat in my lap. He was quite interested in looking out the window and climbed up my shoulder to get a good look at everything!

10/21/03—Puppy Selection Visit:

The puppies seemed much more dog-like this visit than the first time I saw them, when they were a week or two old and just opening their eyes. Of the three yellow pupsI chose the one that’s a little darker, with some red in his coat, rather than either of the two that are much lighter colored. He seems a little smaller and calmer.

9/24/03—Puppies Born:

There were 12 total, but the last one, a yellow male, was stillborn. That leaves 8 black and 3 yellow.

The story goes that even though Mama (Dazey) has her papers and is a thoroughbred yellow Lab, they don’t know who the father is. Apparently Dazey was left outside in a dog run and she must have gotten pregnant through the fence! True! So we don’t know how big they’ll get . . .
