Course Rules

Knappy Links is not like other golf courses. Two obvious examples are the lack of fringe on the green and the fact that a putt that goes past the hole usually rolls off the green. Players therefore use the following local rules.

  1. A ball that comes to rest “inside the leather” (approx. 2 feet) from the edge of the green can be placed on the green, no closer to the hole.
  2. If a ball goes off the green past the hole (but “inside the leather”), a player has two options:
    • play the ball as it lies to the original target hole
    • move the ball back onto the green and aim for the opposite hole at the same end of the green.
  3. If a ball goes off the green past the hole but ends up “outside the leather,” the player must play from that spot to the opposite hole at that end of the green.
  4. If a ball ends up closer to the hole opposite the target hole, the player plays his next shot to the original target hole
  5. “Rolling,” “fluffing,” or even teeing the ball on a clump of grass are always allowed (my grass isn’t exactly golf course turf).
  6. Any shot finishing between the shed and the green, in the garden, or too close to the fence to play can be brought onto the green with no penalty.
  7. Matches tied after nine holes go to sudden death; play alternates between #8 and #9 until a winner is determined.
  8. In stroke play, the maximum score on any single hole is six; no maximum in match play.
  9. On the #8 tee shot, a ball that bounces off the railing and then strikes a competitor may be replayed with no penalty and the original stroke is not counted; if the ball strikes the player and/or doesn’t strike a competitor it may be either played as it lies or replayed from the tee with no penalty (a second shot). This keeps everyone on their toes (rule proposed by Darin Miller).
