Bio

Where were you born? What is your ethnic origin or ancestry? List some of the places you have lived or traveled.
I was born in Arlington, VA on July 26, 1963, on my parents’ 11th wedding anniversary. I grew up in Annandale, VA; moved back to my "roots" in Arlington in 1997. Dad (George) from Iowa, Mom (Marilyn Shields) from Ohio. My Mom traced our family back to Jonathan Knapp who came over from Sussex, England, in 1608, but I'm a mutt (English, Irish, German, even a little Native American, among others). People say I look Norwegian because of my blond hair, but I don’t think I have much Nordic blood in me. I have also lived in Arizona (
Arcosanti), California, Richmond, and Princeton, New Jersey.

What type of work do you do? How long have you been in that line of work?

I have been in marketing for over 15 years, and have been running my own marketing firm,
Snapp Productions, since 1999. During 2002 I took a long -term gig, my first executive position, vice president of marketing with a government contractor. It was fun to tell other people what to do for a change instead of having to do everything myself. Unfortunately the company restructured and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, so I'm back to servicing my Snapp customers full time again.

Where did you attend high school and/or college? What are/were your favorite subjects in school?
I graduated from W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, VA, in 1981. I earned my B.A. in Sociology at Princeton University. I started out as an engineering major, but enjoyed my liberal arts courses more so I changed to sociology after three semesters. Best decision I ever made.

Describe your personality and physique.
I am fun, honest, intelligent, considerate, and a bit offbeat. I laugh easily and often -- I try to find humor in any situation, good or bad (even this questionnaire). Physically, I'm 5'11", 175 lb. my blond hair makes me stick out in a crowd; I look younger than my 40 years. I got Lasix surgery at the beginning of 2003 so I don’t wear glasses any more.

I'm a passionate Leo with a fire personality, so I'm also very affectionate. My passions are music, golf, food, and beer. Golf is like dancing without the music—rhythm, timing, and balance are key. Oh, and if the music is rockin', I'll shake it on the dance floor.

A judge I once met at a bar accused me of having "over-abundant enthusiasm"—then he went on to say that he wished he had more of that himself. In other words, although I may seem laid-back initially, I am actually a very intense person. I don't mess around in anything I do—if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right. Then I relax and have fun. Give me a shout and we'll go have some fun!

Which virtues give you most of your self-confidence? If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My humor and intelligence enable me to deal with most any situation. I'm a good listener—compassionate and sympathetic. And I'm a good judge of character—but I try not to prejudge anyone I meet. You can learn something from anyone. I have been called "honest to a fault," so I guess my political skills could use some help. At least you'll know where I stand. No game playing here.

What is your insight into spirituality, and how do you practice this belief?
My spirituality is largely derived from the energy you feel at a Grateful Dead, Phish, or String Cheese Incident concert. I believe that all religions are equally valid—and therefore equally invalid. I don't believe that anyone's spiritual beliefs are "more correct" than anyone else's. As Edie Brickell says, "Religion is the smile of a
dog."

Favorite pastime? Sport? Hobby? Diversion? Just what goes on Sundays at your place?
I enjoy playing golf, biking, and listening to music. I also like to eat well—fortunately I'm a decent cook. I like to use Sundays to recharge my battery so that I'm ready to tackle whatever I have to do that week. Sunday afternoon naps are the best.

How would you characterize your political leanings? (i.e. Democrat, Republican, Reform, Libertarian, Independent, radically left/right, don't care).
I am basically apolitical. Growing up around Washington, D.C., has made me politically saavy, if somewhat cynical. I don't trust either major party. I lean left but also agree w/Libertarians on many issues. No, I don’t enjoy paying taxes, but I don’t lie awake cursing our government for taking my money either.

What type of music do you enjoy? List performances or concerts you have attended.
I like rock & roll, blues, and jazz—anything with soul. But I'll give anything a listen—as Louis Armstrong said, "There's two kinds of music—good and bad." In general, I prefer live music. I saw many Grateful Dead shows. Other memorable shows in the past few years include: Bob Dylan, X, Steve Earle, Phish, Phil & Friends, The Other Ones, Jeff Beck, String Cheese Incident, and Santana, among others. I prefer smaller bar bands like
Bill Kirchen or The Next Step these days, but my two favorite acts that play locally are Donna the Buffalo and The Recipe.

List some of your favorite lines from movies, poems, songs or commercials.
"Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world."

What are your all-time favorite movies and/or actors?

  • Brazil
  • Blues Brothers
  • Caddyshack
  • Best in Show
  • The Hidden
  • If you could pick one super-human power (such as comic-book characters have) what would you choose?
I’d be able to hit a golf ball like Tiger Woods

If you could 'Do Lunch' with anyone, who would it be?
Jerry Garcia and the rest of the Grateful Dead

What are some of your life-long goals? Where would you like to be in 2 years? In 5 years?
I would like to achieve the best possible balance between work and personal life. After all, time is money and if you don't have time you can't appreciate what you have, right? I have achieved my earlier goals of owning a house, a dog, a Lexus, and my own business and I would like to share what I have with someone who will appreciate what we have. I can see starting a family in the next 2-5 years.

What is "SEXY"? What do you find "SEXY" in a partner?
Bright eyes turn me on more than anything—direct eye contact that shows your verve for life. Followed closely by a great smile and nice legs. And of course a being great kisser is important—but you can't tell that by looking at someone.

Describe the type of person you might be interested in meeting. What traits do you find attractive?
You are a shining happy person. You smile easily and exude a positive aura. I want to feel sparks when we meet. You never know about chemistry, so I don't have a particular "look" in mind. I'm open to whoever destiny brings me.

What personal habits of others really irritate you?
Pushing one's beliefs on others. Not listening to what the other person says during a conversation. Lying, cheating, stealing.
